We were founded in 1852 by Harriet Monsell and Canon T.T.Carter, to help the marginalised and outcast women in Victorian society, This ministry quickly expanded to Sister feeling called to nurse the sick, to care for and educate the young and to succour the needy. Our original purpose-built Convent was The House of Mercy, and our official title - The Sisters of Mercy. Our oroginal charism came from the example of John the Baptist, who prepared the way for the Lord, by calling people to repentance. Today our apostolic mission finds expression according to the gifts and opportunities of the sisters; and we recognise these ministries as part of a wider calling. |
